DHA — docosahexaenoic acid — is the most abundant omega-3 fatty acid in the human brain, and it is not incidental that it ends up there. The developing nervous system actively concentrates DHA from the blood into neural tissue, where it is incorporated into the membranes of neurons and the retina. A brain under construction — from conception through early childhood — requires a reliable supply of DHA to build the structures it will depend on for a lifetime. For parents in Singapore trying to feed children well, this is one of the most well-supported reasons to include fish regularly in the family diet.

The science on DHA and neurodevelopment is not speculative. Large observational studies, and a substantial body of mechanistic research, consistently show that adequate DHA intake during pregnancy and the first two years of life is associated with better outcomes in visual acuity, language acquisition, attention, and cognitive performance. These are not marginal effects in poorly nourished populations — they show up in well-nourished populations in wealthy countries as well.

When the Brain Needs DHA Most

The third trimester of pregnancy is the period of most rapid brain growth, and DHA accumulation in fetal brain tissue is fastest during this window. A pregnant woman who eats oily fish two to three times per week maintains the DHA stores that support this accumulation; one who avoids fish entirely relies on the body's limited conversion from plant-derived ALA, which is inefficient. After birth, breast milk from mothers with good DHA intake transfers DHA directly to the infant. Formula-fed infants receive DHA through supplemented formula.

From six months, when solids begin, directly feeding DHA-rich foods becomes the primary route. The brain continues growing rapidly through age two, and meaningful growth continues through adolescence. There is no single window after which DHA stops mattering; it continues to support neurological function throughout life, but the early years are when dietary supply has the greatest structural impact.

How Much DHA Do Children Need?

There is no single universally agreed daily intake figure for DHA in children, partly because research continues to refine the picture. The European Food Safety Authority recommends 100mg of DHA per day for children 2 to 18, with higher amounts during pregnancy and lactation. For infants under 2, the guidance points toward ensuring DHA-rich foods are part of the diet regularly. A single serving of oily fish — salmon trout, fjord trout, or black cod — typically provides several hundred milligrams of DHA, well above the daily target.

Which Fish Provides the Most DHA?

  • Black cod (gindara) — one of the richest DHA sources available; a single fillet delivers a meaningful weekly supply
  • Firda salmon trout — consistently high DHA from its cold-water diet; the closest oily fish to Atlantic salmon
  • Norwegian fjord trout — similar DHA profile to salmon trout, slightly milder flavour
  • Greenland halibut — significant DHA content for a flatfish; good variety for the rotation
  • Batang (Spanish mackerel) — very high omega-3 content; limit for young children due to mercury but excellent for adults
  • Threadfin and pomfret — lower in omega-3 than oily fish but still contribute usefully to overall intake

White Fish vs Oily Fish for DHA

White-fleshed fish — threadfin, pomfret, grouper, seabass, snapper — are lower in total fat and therefore lower in DHA than oily species. They remain excellent sources of protein, iodine, and zinc, and they contribute some DHA to the diet, but they cannot match the output of a portion of salmon trout or black cod. A practical approach for families is to include one to two servings of oily fish per week alongside more frequent meals of white fish. For babies, introducing salmon trout or fjord trout by 8 to 9 months — once white fish is well-established and tolerated — gives them access to the higher DHA content they need.

DHA Supplements vs Food: Which Is Better?

Fish oil supplements and algae-based DHA supplements are widely marketed for children, and they have a role for families where dietary intake is genuinely limited. But the evidence base for DHA from whole fish is more robust than for supplements in isolation, and whole fish brings the additional benefits of complete protein, iodine, selenium, and vitamin D that a DHA capsule does not replicate. Where possible, eating the fish is preferable to supplementing around a fish-free diet. When fish genuinely cannot be included — due to allergy, strong aversion, or other constraint — a quality supplement fills an important gap. But for the majority of families in Singapore with access to excellent fresh fish, regular oily fish meals are the most effective and complete way to meet a child's DHA needs.
